The Council for Registration of Engineers in Nigeria (COREN), Anambra State branch, has certified the Anambra State Materials Testing Laboratory Hub professionals.

Tribune Online gathered that the laboratory was set up to check the incidence of building collapse in Anambra State, which has become a recurring event in several states.

The administration of Mr. Peter Obi, as the governor of the state, started the building of the laboratory and it was completed and commissioned in 2014 by the immediate past governor, Willie Obiano.

Mrs. Ogechukwu Anastasia, Head of Data Analysis and Research, who spoke on behalf of the hub, at the event, said the Laboratory is equipped with modern materials, testing equipment and power to carry out testing, sub-soil investigation, aggregate sand and cement, water and other chemical tests , also a test on steel bar reinforcement, recognized as the first of its kind in Nigeria.

According to him, the laboratory will improve the structural integrity of buildings while reducing the incidence of building collapse and other infrastructural defects in the country.

It will also improve the organizational structure for the study of sound engineering practice in the country.

He said that the laboratory test, which is on the premises of the state ministry is managed by a Public Private Partnership arrangement between the State government and private companies.

In his speech, the Chairman of COREN, in the state, Engr Victor Onyeanyana Meju, while certifying the hub, said they have used the laboratory facilities to carry out investigative work on the collapsed two-storey building that claimed the lives of two carpenters. in Oraifite, Ekwusigo Local Government Area and other buildings in the country.

Engr Meju explained the benefits of the testing laboratory to the public and contractors and said that they are working with the ministry to see how to use it throughout the country to cover residential, commercial, and religious buildings including banks, hotels, supermarkets and others. .

He also called on all stakeholders to give their full support to the safety efforts to achieve the established goals.
